Tired But Wired: Why Night Shifts Wreck Your Sleep at 35+
You clock off at 7am. Every cell in your body is begging for sleep. You get home, blackout blind down, phone on silent — and then you just... lie there. Wide awake. Heart doing that low hum of alertness, brain still doing handover in your head three hours later.

It's not in your head — it's in your cortisol
Here's the bit nobody explains on your induction day: your body runs on a 24-hour hormone rhythm called the circadian rhythm, and cortisol — your main wakefulness hormone — is the conductor of it. In a normal pattern, cortisol drops low around midnight, then rises through the early hours to wake you up.
Shift work breaks that pattern on purpose, every single week. Add in melatonin — the hormone that should be quietly rising as you head towards bed — and shift workers come off worse there too. Night-shift nurses have been shown to produce measurably less melatonin, with delayed and blunted peaks compared to day workers. Less melatonin, more circulating cortisol, at the exact hours your body should be winding down. That's the biology behind "tired but wired." It isn't a discipline problem. It's a hormone-timing problem.
Why this hits differently after 35
Clinically, what I see time and again with women in this age bracket is that shift work stops being something you "just get used to" the way you might have in your 20s. A few reasons why:
Recovery windows shrink. The same research shows rotating-shift nurses need multiple consecutive rest nights to bring cortisol back down — and most rotas don't give you that.
Perimenopause can already be quietly shifting your hormone baseline from your mid-to-late 30s onwards, which means your system has less buffer to absorb the extra stress load of irregular shifts.
