
PCOS and Iron Deficiency: The Overlooked Connection
If you have PCOS and you're constantly tired, the conversation usually jumps straight to insulin resistance or thyroid. Iron rarely gets a mention — and that's a gap.
Here's the connection most PCOS content skips
PCOS can cause heavier or more prolonged periods for some women, particularly with anovulatory cycles where the uterine lining builds up for longer than usual. Heavier bleeding means more iron loss, month after month.
Add that to a body already dealing with hormonal and metabolic strain, and it's easy to see how "PCOS tiredness" and "iron deficiency tiredness" get lumped into one unexplained exhaustion — when they may actually be two separate, both fixable, issues.
Signs it's worth checking:
Fatigue that doesn't improve with more sleep
Breathlessness or dizziness with minor exertion
Pale skin, brittle nails, or hair shedding on top of your usual PCOS symptoms
What I'd suggest
A simple blood test — full iron panel, not just haemoglobin — is the only way to know for sure. Clinically, this is one of the first things I ask about with PCOS clients who describe fatigue as their most disruptive symptom, because it's so commonly missed in standard PCOS management.
If iron deficiency is confirmed, herbal and nutritional support alongside any medical treatment can make a genuine difference to how you feel day to day.
