On 22 September the day and the night stand level. For a few hours the scales balance, and then the year tips. From here the light shortens, the air sharpens, and everything that grew all summer starts handing its energy back to the root.
The old names for this point are Mabon, Harvest Home, the second harvest. Whatever you call it, the equinox asks a simple question: what have you gathered, and what are you willing to set down so you can carry it?
You don't need a field to answer that. You need a kitchen table, a candle, a little quiet, and about twenty minutes. This ritual is built for the city — for flats with no garden, for evenings that start after work, for people whose altar is the corner of a bookshelf.
Most of us run our lives on the spring-and-summer setting all year round. Start things. Push. Grow. The equinox is the calendar's reminder that half the cycle is release, and that the release is not a failure of the growth — it's what makes the next growth possible.
Balance is the theme, but not the tidy kind. The equinox balance is a hinge: a moment of equal light and dark that exists precisely so the year can turn. Ritual at this point is about acknowledging the pivot, not freezing it.
One candle (beeswax or plain white is lovely, but whatever you have is fine)
Your tarot deck if you have one (and if you don't, keep reading — there's a way in for you too)
For now, though, just do the ritual. Open the window. Name what you've gathered. Set something down.
The year is turning. Turn with it.
